Lasting Impressions....

Memorable comments left by travellers:

"Travel to and from the airport is usually via high-speed armed police escorted company convoy - but this is normal practice in Nigeria!"  (?)

"Nothing compares in filth, insecurity, and lack of facilities to the Muhammed Murtala airport in Lagos, Nigeria" (Sharon Schierling)

"My wife and I travel though the Lagos airports, both international and domestic, about three times a year. She has been going to Lagos since the mid 90s and tells me things have vastly improved. I found it similar to other African airports. I have never felt in danger once in the airport itself and especially not once into the secure departure areas. The cold Star Beer is great. I have never been asked for a bribe but have had some agents look longingly for tip which I do not mind. Last time through I did even get some hours of sleep but that was in the secure international area as I was waiting for the BA flight back to London and onto the States. I only wish there was some "official" transfers from the domestic side of the airport to the international side. We do pay an off duty Lagos policeman to meet us and get a car to take us from one to the other. Anytime we have had to spend the night in Lagos I think I would rather spend the night at the airport. All in all, I understand things at LOS have gotten a lot better."

"i landed in Lagos from my flight via addis ababa from India and was quite happy to visit the country first time as i had received an excellent employer contract. My horror started from the very first point of check in counter where officials took me to a side room on account of some suspicion which i was not even told by. in the room sat a white dressed customs like person who told me that they have a doubt that i was carrying drugs. they insisted to check my hand baggage and i opened the same . As they did not find anything suspicious they pointed out at the indian currency notes i was carrying along and when they came to know about this , they threw the same on the floor and demanded US dollars or they will detain me. I was too scared as i did not know what to do . after they made me wait for 2 hours , they finally asked me to move towards the exit ,. when i was on my way to the exit a group of officials with badges and no uniform again stopped my way and asked me to give them dollars . when i told them i ain't carrying any , they threatened me to be prisoned . i was literally shaken as i was not aware of any one out there and my friend was waiting outside the airport. Finally a big nigerian gentleman cam forth and asked these officials in a commanding voice to lay off and apologised to me for all the inconvenience. and that was how i was allowed to go . would rate nigeria as a good country , but fails in law and order completely ."

  • false accusations, murders, robberies, fights, rumours of passengers being mugged on the tarmac
  • Don't drink the water
  • Overflowing toilets
  • You'll want to read these reviews even if you are not travelling to Lagos.  These will make you appreciate your own "horror" stories a little more.
