"The problem with Varadero airport is that
the influx of tourists has vastly outgrown the size of the airport." (?)
What you can look forward to:
smoking is permitted
hot when air-conditioning is not working and freezing when
it is working.
limited seating without armrest at gates
there is a VIP lounge that you can arrange to stay in

"This is the smallest airport I've ever been in. 1
terminal, 3 gates, though only one used at a time. There is
seating for perhaps 600 (just enough for everyone on your
flight!) and no space to spare. The chairs fortunately have no
armrests, but are metal mesh, very hard, and impossible to sleep
on with elderly folks trying to get the seats your spread
across. As you're probably in Cuba on a package holiday, you're
sure to arrive at the airport at least 4 hours before your
flight leaves. Bring some snacks with you from the hotel, the
kiosks in the waiting lounge are expensive and really not worth
the effort. The televisions are always on, playing Spanish
stations very loudly, echoing through the tiny terminal. I
strongly suggest you check in and pay the airport tax, but for
the love of heaven, do not go through passport control yet! Take
this time to go back outside (with your luggage of course) and
sit in the sun for a final three hours before returning to
winter. After 4 hours in the lounge, the 5 hour flight home was
hell!"
