I spent a lot of time getting tickets at the Barcelona train station with some friends I was travelling with. Virtually no one in Spain speaks english except for some travel agents and maybe government workers. I think only one cashier spoke english . .. anyway, we sat down to wait for the *incredibly* long lines to shorten, and after about ten minutes a guard came up to us and asked us to move because you can't sleep here! We where only sitting! I think I spotted several other people sleeping, so it is strange that he picked on us .. . . on the other hand, the train station in Barcelona is heated, and there are lockers to store your stuff, and a MacDonald's and some other restaurants and shops are open that sell basic groceries/toiletries, etc. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for paranoid guards!

"I, along with numerous others, were kicked out of Barcelona Sants Station. We had been trying to purchase tickets but although the queues were never very long, it took an age for the staff to actually issue the damn things. This means that if you are left holding a numbered ticket and the station is about to close, you have to come back in the morning about 5am where they restart the queue were they left off!!!! I was astounded at this practice but the Spanish students around me took it in their stride. We were chucked outside where about 100 potential passengers camped for the night huddled against the station's main doors. It was summer so warm but I had my bag with me and was on my lonesome, not good. Also, the main taxi rank runs parallel to the entrance so every hour or so some spiteful driver would drive down it and blow his horn for 30 seconds, sods!

I couldn't find a hotel/hostel/pension either. Never arrive in Barcelona in the summer without a confirmed booking for your bed!!! You do not want to have to sleep on the concourse of Barcelona Sants Station!"
