Being a Finn I obviously know the place quite well and I wouldn't hesitate sleeping there, it's a quiet and clean airport with soft leather benches without armrests and the toilets are almost spotless, whether you're in the transit zone or haven't passed through the security check doesn't matter. Although I haven't spend a night there I once had my flight arriving late in the evening and had to wait a couple of hours for the bus to take me to my hometown shortly after midnight. On that occasion I laid myself down in the corner of the arrivals sector of the international terminal. At least based on that experience I would say that this is probably one of the most tranquil places at the airport, I didn't see anyone else sleeping there nor anyone bothering me. it is almost right downstairs from the main check inn hall.
Now the non-Schengen part can seem a bit crowded in the evening and late afternoon before the flights to Asia take off but I guess it should be also a relatively quiet place at night if you have to stay there for some reason. Besides there is a big expansion work going on and the terminal should be much better (a spa etc.) when they're finished.

Helsinki has one of the best for FREE sleeping at any aiports that Ive been thru. I happened to be there when missed my bus and had no boarding cards or any business at the airport. Between the domestic and international terminals are the best most quiet seats. Great if youre only looking for a place to sleep. At around 6 AM people will start coming in and youll wake up, but thats great for an airport. Security is good, but they wont bother you if asleep.
so, just how bad is this airport?
