"A friend and I spent a night in Zurich train station in
March 05. We were travelling with an Interrail pass, and we were
not willing to pay for a hostel. We were in the station from about
9 pm to 5 am the next morning. Until 10 everything was fine,
because Zurich train station resembles a mall, there's lots to do.
At 10 everything closed, and we were beginning to get tired. We
began by trying to sleep on some hard stone benches, but were
woken by a good Samitarian who told us all about the youth hostel.
We wandered upstairs and found a hotel listing, where you could
check prices (too high) and addresses of hotels. You could even
call free if so inclined. After this we discovered a waiting room
that was open until midnight for those with valid tickets. The
seats were plastic and uncomfortable, but there were no armrests
so we could stretch out. Unfortunately that waiting room closed at
midnight. There was another waiting room available from 12-6 for
those with valid train passes, but securtity didn't open it. We
found out around 1, after unsuccessfully trying to sleep on a
stone bench, that we had to ask for them to open it. It was
opened, there was a bathroom, and we got a couple hours of sleep.
We were thrown out around 5 by a security guard who seemed rather
irritated that we had been sleeping... should have been waiting...
We hopped on the next train out and slept there. Overall bearable.
We could have done it better if we'd had information about the
train station beforehand."
