REVIEWS Cairns - International & Domestic ..... kingtim1st February, 2010 Cairns airport We stayed here a couple of weeks ago and it was great. There are 4 showers in the international terminal which is open all night as well as flat seats you can kip on.
The taxi drivers are wind up merchants at the domestic terminal and will probably try and discourage you from trekking over to the international one but ignore them. There's not much at the domestic terminal apart from a lot of incredibly uncomfortable seats and the baggage reclaim....make your way over to the international for more luxury (obviously I'm using this term loosely!).
Have fun, hope this helps!
Cairns - ..... DubGirl November, 2009 Making great progress I have been travelling around Australia for about 12 months - lots of people talking about Cairns wow what a beautiful place. The airport is undergoing redevelopment but you can really see progress - I was recently told you could sleep there, however doesn't seem the case now, lots of hotel options close by though.
Cairns - Cairns Airport ..... crestain May, 2008 Surprisingly impressed After a rough start, wherein I learned that I was five minutes late for check-in to noon flight to Darwin (because it turned out the flight was the first leg of an international flight), I found out my next possible flight was not for 24 hours. Thus began my longest layover in an airport with two teen boys. We found the benches and couches great for sleeping, in the early evening and in the morning the hallways were quiet enough for a quick game of catch, going in and out of security for food or a deck of cards was easy. The showers were the best surprise ever!
Cairns - International ..... gateseven July, 2008 Sleep is possible here :) Connecting flight to Nagoya so thought why not try the old sleep at the airport gig. This one is not bad. Large flat cushioned (not thick but adequate) seats seemingly designed for sleeping on. Not too many of them, but there was no-one there on a Monday night, ie I had the whole international terminal to myself from about 12 midnight to 4am.
No security around, many cameras though so they must not care.
As you enter the terminal in the left rear of the checkin area (near the entrance), under a staircase, there is a quiet alcove. No seat buts carpet is soft and if I could do it again I would sleep there, as it is fairly well concealed.
Great bonus here is free hot clean showers! If you forgot a towel just grab some paper towels from the toilets, there are plenty. Nice soap also.
Not a busy international airport so not too noisy, though by five some people will be drifting...

I didn't need to sleep there on the outbound trip, but I sussed out areas to sleep. There are some really good padded benches (I would not call them couches as there are no arms or backs, but they are wide) outside the immigration/security area upstairs in the international terminal, but I suspect these may be well known as they were all taken as I went thru to catch my outbound at midnite.
I arrived back to Cairns on at midnite on 31/8/07. I had a domestic flight at 6:25 a.m. I went to the domestic terminal and in the area between the check-in desks & security, there are lots of padded benches. As someone else noted, they are nice & wide. At first, I took the one by the window that looked out of the way, but it is next to a water fountain tha...

In fact the check-in area was completely dead and in general very quiet, I was able to use the pay phones and pretty much didn't encounter anyone. I believe it was a Sunday or a weekday when we did this. We awoke to the first few travellers checking in in the morning and the three of us went through security ourselves. Pretty uneventful." CAIRNS - Domestic Terminal ..... web-administrator March, 2005 Untitled4568 (Contributed by Sarah) - "I was with two friends in Cairns, having just travelled up the east coast, we were all very poor by this point and had to be at the airport by 4am anyway so figured we may as well rough it for one night to save 20. We were flying out of the international terminal but our very helpful cab driver took us to the domestic as it's the only terminal which stays open all night. After reading some horror stories on this site we were a bit worried about what to expect but were pleasantly surprised to find large(bigger than a single bed) sized cushioned benches. We managed to find a cornered off section which had three of these next to each other (perfect for us) as well as it's own lighting. The security were great and talked to us for a bit and told us we were lucky as normally they play terrible elevator music over the PA. Air conditioning was a little cold but conside...

The only *good* thing was the country chicken baguette from Hungry Jack's. That was good. I was glad that they had a Hungry Jack's instead of any other fast food outlet. In my general airport experience, give the independent deli-style food places a miss and go for something reliable like this to avoid staleness and general culinary banality." Added 20 April 2005
CAIRNS - ..... web-administrator June, 1999 Untitled4566 (Contributed by Sarah) - "I hate Cairns airport!! I often fly through Cairns on my way to another destination and hate the long stopovers. My flights are always delayed, there is nothing to do or see and there is very little in the way of shopping. There is no seating in the unsecure area although its quiet and empty. The secure area isn't much better seating wise but it can be crowded. They had even upgraded the airport. My brother and I were stuck in Cairns for 6 hours. But nothing could be done, so always take a good book and don't let your kids fly through there unaccompanied. When we were too young to fly alone, we would be locked into a room with some books and I always felt we would be forgotten as no one ever came near us, until the time come to run to our flight as it was about to leave. We were always hungry as we couldn't leave to buy food. Don't use the loo when the first boa...
