DAMASCUS, Syria

"It takes the local police 10 minutes to track a sleeping person and to point with a Kalashnikov to his face" (Wim Ploegaerts)

What you can look forward to:

  • security is tight
  • no where to sit or sleep

"My many naps in the Damascus airport were pleasant, but only because I had the privilege of staying in the VIP or Business class lounges, which were comfortable and friendly. There were always DROVES of less fortunate Middle Easterners sleeping in the hard plastic seats and marble floors in the main transit area, and I always felt very sorry for them. The nickname for this area amongst the more "gung-ho" type expats was the al-Qaida Inn.
Don't expect any privacy in the Internet cafe, but at least it exists (at least it did in 2004). The best features are the duty free shop and the kiosk of the EXCELLENT local chocolatier, Ghraoui -- how can you beat 10 for a half-kilo of handmade chocolates?! But the little cafe was pretty sparse and overpriced.
And those security personnel -- they were everywhere, but generally very good hosts if you were minding your own business."
